Bob was one of the founders of DAM in the mid-1990s. He was a sergeant with the Durham Police Motorcycle Section until his retirement. He also assisted in the training of DAM members to Observer and Senior Observer level. With the IAM he was the examiner in the Durham region and examined hundreds of DAM members.
In 1995 he helped set up BikeWise, a scheme to break down barriers between police and bike enthusiasts – and he has been honoured with Motorcycle News’ Hero of the Year Award.
In 2007 he went on to help establish the BikeWise Mini Bike club, with a fleet of 50cc mini moto bikes, associated safety kit, cones, flags and other equipment. The training was organised through the ACU, thus helping youngsters aged 6 to 17 to ride motorcycles in a safe and legal fashion.
In retirement, Bob and fellow ex-police officer Mick Alder, ran BikeWise Training, which taught advanced skills to riders and was supported by the police and Durham County Council.
